فَلا يَستَطيعونَ تَوصِيَةً وَلا إِلىٰ أَهلِهِم يَرجِعونَ

Then they will not be able to make any will, nor will they return to their folks.

EXEGESIS

Tawṣiyah is to make a will or to bequeath (waṣiyyah); however, it may be used for enjoining, requesting, or commanding someone to do something.^{‎[1]Lane, p. 3055.}

The indefinite noun used for the bequest or the will indicates that they would not be given even a tiny moment after the cry.^{‎[2]Amthal, 14/208.}

EXPOSITION

This shows the extent of the suddenness of the cry and how it will take everyone by surprise. No half-done business could be completed by a will and no one could return to their folks and families to bid them farewell.

This verse mentions the typical human reaction when he becomes aware of his imminent death when there is no hope for life. First, he strives to reach his family members. Secondly, he tries to make arrangements for the well-being of those he leaves behind by making a will to someone trustworthy to take care of them. The cry spares no one and gives no respite to anyone, and there remains not a single soul to hear and fulfil any will or listen to any recommendation.
