Ṣād – Verse 56

جَهَنَّمَ يَصلَونَها فَبِئسَ المِهادُ

Hell, which they shall enter, an evil resting place.

EXEGESIS

Mihād (resting place) refers to a place where a person goes to rest, and it indicates a peaceful and calm place. This is why it is used for a baby’s cradle as well.[1] This is of course an ironical description, like the verse, give them the good news of a painful punishment (3:21).[2]

EXPOSITION

This verse begins the descriptions of the bad destination that was mentioned in the previous verse. Each description is juxtaposed to the descriptions of heaven. The evil resting place is placed in opposite to heaven with its welcoming open doors in which the God-wary recline, at ease.
