Al-Mujādilah – Verse 20

إِنَّ الَّذينَ يُحادّونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسولَهُ أُولٰئِكَ فِي الأَذَلّينَ

Indeed those who oppose Allah and His Apostle – they will be among the most abased.

EXPOSITION

This verse hearkens back to verse 5, which it resembles. This verse explains and justifies the state of the opponents of God and His Messenger as being the losers. It explains that they will be losers because they oppose God and His Messenger by means of opposition and resistance, while the opponents of God and His Messenger are from the totality of the humiliated and abased ones of God’s creation.[1] And why should that not be so when God emphatically says: and to God belongs might, and to His Messenger, and to the believers (63:8), and certainly not to those who are in opposition to them.

The opponents of God will be from the most abased and humiliated ones because humiliation of one of the parties to a quarrel or dispute depends upon the measure of power and might of the other, and when power and might belong to God in their totality and when His might and power is unlimited, there does not remain for the one who opposes God save pure and unadulterated abasement and humiliation.[2]
