About this chapter

Sūrat al-Ḥāqqah is the sixty-ninth chapter of the Quran. It takes its name from its first verse. It comprises fifty-two verses and is seventy-eighth in order of revelation, and therefore a late Meccan surah believed to have been revealed shortly after Sūrat al-Mulk (67). Of the 114 chapters in the Quran, eighty-five or eighty-six are Meccan.

The introduction sets out when the chapter came and what it addresses; the merits gather what the narrations say of reading it. Both are written as units of the tafsir, with their own footnotes.

  1. 1–3 The inevitable reality!
  2. 4 Thamūd and ʿĀd denied the catastrophe.
  3. 5 As for Thamūd, they were destroyed by the cry.
  4. 6 And as for ʿĀd, they were destroyed by a fierce icy gale.
  5. 7–8 Which He disposed against them for seven gruelling nights and eight days, so that you could have seen the people lying about therein…
  6. 9 Then brought Pharaoh and those who were before him, and the towns that were overturned, iniquity.
  7. 10 Then they disobeyed the apostle of their Lord, so He seized them with a terrible seizing.
  8. 11 Indeed when the flood rose high, We carried you in a floating ark.
  9. 12 That We might make it a reminder for you, and that a receptive ear might retain it.
  10. 13 So when the trumpet is blown with a single blast.
  11. 14 And the earth and the mountains are lifted and levelled with a single levelling.
  12. 15 Then, on that day, will the imminent [hour] befall.
  13. 16 And the sky will be split open – for it will be frail that day.
  14. 17 And the angels will be all over it, and bearing the Throne of your Lord above them on that day will be eight.
  15. 18 That day you will be exposed: none of your secrets will remain hidden.
  16. 19 As for him who is given his book in his right hand, he will say: ‘Here, take and read my book!
  17. 20 Indeed I knew that I shall encounter my account.’
  18. 21–23 So he will have a pleasant life,
  19. 24 [They will be told:] ‘Eat and drink, enjoying [yourselves], for what you had sent in advance in past days.’
  20. 25–27 But as for him who is given his book in his left hand, he will say: ‘I wish I had not been given my book,
  21. 28–29 My wealth did not avail me.
  22. 30–31 ‘Seize him, and fetter him!
  23. 32 Then, in a chain whose length is seventy cubits, bind him.
  24. 33 Indeed he had no faith in Allah, the all-supreme.
  1. 34 And he did not urge the feeding of the needy.
  2. 35 So he has no friend here today.
  3. 36 Nor any food except pus.
  4. 37 Which no one shall eat except the iniquitous.’
  5. 38–39 No indeed! I swear by what you see
  6. 40 It is indeed the speech of a noble messenger.
  7. 41–42 And it is not the speech of a poet. Little is the faith that you have!
  8. 43 Gradually sent down from the Lord of all the worlds.
  9. 44–47 Had he faked any sayings in our name,
  10. 48 Indeed it is a reminder for the God-wary.
  11. 49–50 Indeed We know that there are some among you who deny [it].
  12. 51 It is indeed certain truth.
  13. 52 So celebrate the name of your Lord, the all-supreme.
