Cookies

What cookies are

Cookies are small files a website asks your browser to keep. Sites also keep small settings in your browser's own storage. This page lists every one The Ocean of the Quran uses and what it is for. Our privacy notice explains how we handle personal information in general.

Needed for the site to work

These are set only when you use the feature they serve. The law allows them without asking, because the site cannot do what you asked without them.

  • ooq_web_reader (cookie): keeps you signed in to your account. Set when you sign in; lasts up to 30 days, or until you sign out.

  • ooq_sent_to (cookie): remembers, for 15 minutes, the email address a sign-in code was sent to, so the next step knows where to look.

  • ooq_reading (cookie): your reading settings, such as text size and whether the Arabic is shown, so each page is drawn the way you chose. Lasts a year.

  • oq-theme, oq-text (browser storage): the theme and text size you chose.

  • oq-position (browser storage): where you last stopped reading, so the home page can offer to take you back.

  • ooq_player (browser storage): the player's speed, and whether the Arabic recitation comes before the translation.

  • ooq_recent_searches (browser storage): your last eight searches, offered again in the search box.

  • oq-note-draft (browser storage): a note you have started but not saved, so it is not lost if the page closes.

  • Offline copies (the browser's cache): pages you have read and the site's own files, so a page you read before opens without a connection.

  • oq-consent (browser storage): whether you allowed analytics, so we do not ask on every page.

The browser storage items stay on your device and are not sent to us.

Analytics, only if you allow them

If you choose "That's fine" when the site asks, Google Analytics sets cookies whose names begin with _ga. They count visits and pages read, last up to two years, and tell us nothing about who you are. If you choose "No thanks", or do not answer, none are set.

Changing your mind

Use the link at the foot of every page to change your analytics choice. You can also delete cookies and site data in your browser's settings; if you do, the site will forget your settings and sign you out.
