إِنَّ لَدَينا أَنكالًا وَجَحيمًا

Indeed with Us are heavy fetters and a fierce fire.

EXEGESIS

The term ankāl is the plural of nikl and means heavy chains, shackles, and fetters.^{‎[1]Amthal, 19/139.}

EXPOSITION

This verse warns of heavy chains for such people described in verse 11 which will imprison their bodies leading to the forfeiture of their physical freedom. This state would be the opposite of their current state which was happy, comfortable, and free.^{‎[2]Similar warnings recur in the Quran; see 40:69-72, 76:4, 69:30-33, 14:49, 34:33, and 13:5.}
