Al-Insān – Verse 25

وَاذكُرِ اسمَ رَبِّكَ بُكرَةً وَأَصيلًا

And celebrate the name of your Lord morning and evening.

EXEGESIS

Bukrah (morning) is the time between dawn and sunrise.

Aṣīl (evening) is specifically the time after ʿaṣr, that is the last part of the day, until sunset.[1] However, in Lisān al-ʿArab, aṣīl is also said to mean ʿashī, the meaning of which has divided linguists. In Lisān al-ʿArab, we have that ʿashī is the last part of the day.[2]

INSIGHTS FROM OTHER TRADITIONS

  1. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: To shew forth thy loving kindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night.[3]
  2. Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD. Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD’S name is to be praised.[4]
