وَمِزاجُهُ مِن تَسنيمٍ

عَينًا يَشرَبُ بِهَا المُقَرَّبونَ

And whose seasoning is from tasnīm,

a spring where the close ones drink.

EXEGESIS

Mizājuhu means ‘the mixture of it’.^{‎[1]Mizan, 20/238.}

The root word of tasnīm is sanama, which indicates exaltedness and fullness.^{‎[2]Mizan, 20/238.} Tasnīm is the name of a spring of water running from a high source downwards,^{‎[3]Razi, 31/93; Amthal, 20/37.} and its drink is the best drink in paradise.^{‎[4]Tabrisi, 10/693.}

EXPOSITION

The drink raḥīq, the drink of the pious, is a mixture blended with ingredients taken from a spring in paradise which has supreme quality (tasnīm). The close ones drink directly and purely from tasnīm. Thus, the verses indicate that the close ones have a higher status than the pious.^{‎[5]Mizan, 20/239; Amthal, 20/37.} It may be inferred that the source of what the pious receive in paradise is with the close ones.

It is worth noting that the graces and rewards in heaven are beyond any human imagination or comprehension. Thus whatever metaphoric pictures are used to describe them are but a means to depict an approximation, due to human limitations, to help humans relate to it and get attracted towards it.^{‎[6]Amthal, 20/38.} Otherwise, No one knows what has been kept hidden for them of comfort as a reward for what they used to do (32:17).
