Sūrat al-Sharḥ or al-Inshirāḥ or A-lam Nashraḥ consists of eight verses. There is a difference of opinion whether it was revealed in Mecca or Medina, although Tabatabai is of the opinion that the style of the verses is more in line with those revealed in Medina.
The various names of the surah have all been taken from the first verse of the chapter which refers to the expansion of the heart of Prophet Muhammad (s) for receiving revelation and the profound knowledge of God and creation.
It has been narrated that this surah and Sūrat al-Ḍuḥā which follows it, must be recited together when recited in prayers (ṣalāh).
