Ṣād – Verse 43

وَوَهَبنا لَهُ أَهلَهُ وَمِثلَهُم مَعَهُم رَحمَةً مِنّا وَذِكرىٰ لِأُولِي الأَلبابِ

We gave [back] his family to him along with others like them, as a mercy from Us and an admonition for those who possess intellect.

EXPOSITION

In addition to curing the bodily ailments with which Prophet Job (a) was tested, God gave [back] his family to him. Whatever family members that he had lost or were afflicted during the years of his tribulations were returned to him, and in addition to that he was given even more, and his family expanded along with others like them.

God declares that He did all this as a mercy from Us. Once Prophet Job (a) had preserved and withstood the trials that God had decreed for him, He gave him more than what he had had, because of His mercy and generosity.

Even though no mention is made of his wealth being returned to him, the context would suggest that he reclaimed that as well.[1] Perhaps because it pales in comparison to health and family in rank of importance it is not mentioned.

And an admonition for those who possess intellect. For many of these lessons see the hadith quoted from al-Khiṣāl in the commentary of the previous verse. Indeed, there is much to be learned from this story about patience, reliance on God, the importance of the hereafter, the temporality of this world, the wisdom and mercy of God, our attitudes towards other people, and much more.

For a deeper discussion regarding this see the commentary on 21:84.

INSIGHTS FROM HADITH

  1. From Imam al-Ṣādiq (a): ‘God brought back to life his family that died before his tribulations began and the family that died after his tribulations began.’[2]

REVIEW OF TAFSĪR LITERATURE

Some have said that he was given a new, even larger family. Others have said that his dead family members came back to life and he was also given more than them. Others yet have said that his family had also gotten sick and they became healthy, whilst some others have said they returned after they had scattered from him. Finally, some have mentioned that he was able to provide for them after he was unable to do so.[3]

It is said that he fed the people of his town for seven days and instructed them to praise God in that time.[4]

INSIGHTS FROM OTHER TRADITIONS

  1. After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before. All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him, and each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.[5]
