وَأَنتُم سامِدونَ

While you remain heedless?!

EXEGESIS

Sāmidūn (heedless) is the plural of sāmid and means one who is preoccupied with trifling matters.^{‎[1]Tibyan, 9/441.} It is originally used for the camel that carelessly raises up his head and from that for the one who lifts up his head in defiance.^{‎[2]Nemuneh, 22/575; Alusi, 14/70.} The usage here is then a subtle contrast to the next verse that commands one to bow their head in prostration.

EXPOSITION

Considering the warnings that preceded of the destruction that faced previous nations and the imminence of the final hour and the reality of resurrection, there is no other way to describe the actions of the faithless as anything but heedlessness. Like a camel that raises its head carelessly exposing itself to the dangers of predators and loose footing, the deniers are carelessly heading for destruction, Rivalry [and vainglory] distracted you until you visited [even] the graves. No indeed! Soon you will know! (102:1-3).
