إِن يوحىٰ إِلَيَّ إِلّا أَنَّما أَنا نَذيرٌ مُبينٌ
All that is revealed to me is that I am just a manifest warner.’
EXEGESIS
In (only) has here the meaning of ‘nothing but’. When followed by the verb yūḥā (revealed), it can be understood in one of two ways; firstly, that ‘it has not been revealed to me except that I am a clear warner’; secondly, ‘all that has been revealed to me is nothing but a clear warning’.
EXPOSITION
The Prophet declares here that only the things that relate to his role as a warner are revealed to him. This relates to the previous verse, in the sense that the Prophet did not know about the contention. It was only through revelation that he became aware of it, and even then only to the extent that was needed to warn people and to serve as a lesson and reminder.
