Al-Ghāshiyah · The Enveloper
سُورَةُ الغاشية
About this chapter
Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah is unanimously accepted as a Meccan surah, and has twenty-six verses. The themes in the surah also confirm it as being Meccan. It is the sixty-eighth surah in order of revelation and therefore a later Meccan surah.
The introduction sets out when the chapter came and what it addresses; the merits gather what the narrations say of reading it. Both are written as units of the tafsir, with their own footnotes.

- 1 Has there come to you the account of the Enveloper?
- 2 Some faces on that day will be humbled.
- 3 Toiling and weary.
- 4 They will enter a scorching fire.
- 5 And forced to drink from a boiling spring.
- 6 They will have no food except bitter dry thorns.
- 7 Neither nourishing, nor availing against hunger.
- 8 Some faces on that day will be joyous.
- 9 Pleased with their endeavour.
- 10 In a lofty paradise.
- 11 Wherein they will not hear any vain talk.
- 12 In it there is a flowing spring.
- 13 And in it there are raised couches.
- 14 And goblets set.
- 15 And cushions laid out in an array.
- 16 And carpets spread out.
- 17 Do they not observe the camel, [to see] how she has been created?
- 18 And the sky, how it has been raised?
- 19 And the mountains, how they have been set?
- 20 And the earth, how it has been surfaced?
- 21 So remind – for you are only a reminder.
- 22 And not a taskmaster over them.
- 23 Except him who turns back and disbelieves.
- 24 Him Allah will punish with the greatest punishment.
