Al-Fajr · The Dawn
سُورَةُ الفجر
About this chapter
This chapter is generally considered to be of Meccan provenance and consists of thirty verses. However, there is disagreement regarding its place in the historical chronology of Quranic surahs, regarding which there are three opinions: that it is the ninth, tenth, or eleventh Quranic surah to be revealed in Mecca.
The introduction sets out when the chapter came and what it addresses; the merits gather what the narrations say of reading it. Both are written as units of the tafsir, with their own footnotes.

Verses you have read are marked; the one you are on is shaded
- 1 I swear by the daybreak.
- 2 And by ten nights.
- 3 And by the even and the odd.
- 4 And by the night when it runs its course.
- 5 Is there an oath in that for one possessing intellect?
- 6 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with [the people of] ʿĀd.
- 7 Iram, [the city] of the [lofty] pillars.
- 8 The like of which was not created in [other] cities.
- 9 And [the people of] Thamūd, who hewed out the rocks in the valley.
- 10 And Pharaoh, the owner of the stakes.
- 11–12 All these transgressed [against Allah] in [their] cities,
- 13 So your Lord let a scourge of punishment loose on them.
- 14 Indeed your Lord is always watchful.
- 15–16 As for man, whenever his Lord tests him and grants him honour and blesses him, he says: ‘My Lord has honoured me.’
- 17 No indeed! Rather, you do not honour the orphan.
- 18 And do not urge one another the feeding of the needy.
- 19 And you eat the inheritance rapaciously.
- 20 And you love wealth with exceeding fondness.
- 21 No indeed! When the earth is pounded [to dust], pounded and pounded.
- 22 And your Lord[’s edict] shall arrive, with the angels in ranks.
- 23 The day when hell is brought [near], on that day man will take admonition, but what will that admonition avail him?
- 24–26 He will say: ‘Alas, had I sent ahead [provisions] for my life!’
- 27 ‘O soul at peace!
- 28 Return to your Lord, well-pleased [with Him] and well-pleasing [Him]!
