Ṣād – Verse 68

أَنتُم عَنهُ مُعرِضونَ

Of which you are disregardful.

EXEGESIS

Muʿriḍūn (disregardful) comes from iʿrāḍ, meaning to turn away from something.

EXPOSITION

God then addresses the faithless Meccan’s specifically, saying you are disregardful of this great tiding. This disregard happens by not listening or caring about it and consequently by not acting upon the great importance of the warning given to them.[1]

REVIEW OF TAFSĪR LITERATURE

Those scholars who interpreted the nabaʾ ʿaẓīm to be the Quran have understood turning away from it to mean disregarding its importance, not acting on its commands and prohibitions, and not pondering its verses.
