Al-Layl · The Night
سُورَةُ الليل
About this chapter
Sūrat al-Layl is the ninety-second chapter of the Quran. In terms of the order of revelation, it is believed to be the ninth chapter revealed, after Sūrat al-Aʿlā (87) and before Sūrat al-Fajr (89). The name of the chapter is taken from the first verse where Allah swears by the night.
The introduction sets out when the chapter came and what it addresses; the merits gather what the narrations say of reading it. Both are written as units of the tafsir, with their own footnotes.
The verses

Verses you have read are marked; the one you are on is shaded
- 1 By the night when it envelops.
- 2 By the day when it brightens.
- 3 By Him who created the male and the female.
- 4 Your endeavours are indeed unlike.
- 5 As for him who gives and is God-wary.
- 6 And confirms the best promise.
- 7 We shall surely ease him into facility.
- 8 But as for him who is stingy and considers himself free of need.
- 9 And denies the best promise.
- 10 We shall surely ease him into hardship.
- 11 His wealth shall not avail him when he perishes.
- 12 Indeed upon Us rests guidance.
- 13 And indeed to Us belong the hereafter and the former [world].
- 14 So I warn you of a blazing fire.
- 15 Which none shall enter except the most wretched.
- 16 He who denies and turns back.
- 17 And the most God-wary shall be spared it.
- 18 He who gives his wealth to purify himself.
- 19 And is under no one’s obligation to return his favour.
- 20 But seeks only the pleasure of his Lord, the most exalted.
- 21 And, surely, soon he will be well-pleased.
