Ubayy ibn Kaʿb relates from the Prophet, who said: ‘Whoever recites Sūrat Luqmān shall have Luqmān as his friend on the Day of Resurrection. He shall be credited with ten good deeds for every person who does good deeds and forbids wrong.’[1]

Imam al-Bāqir (a) said: ‘Whoever recites Sūrat Luqmān every night shall have God assign for him thirty angels that night who shall guard him from Iblis and his army till he wakes. And if he recites it during the day then they [the angels] shall continue to guard him from Iblis and his army till he retires for the night.’[2]

Makārim Shīrāzī writes that all these merits for the recitation of a Quranic surah are because it is anticipated that the recitation of the surah will lead to reflection on its contents, which would lead to greater religious literacy on the reciter’s part, and the actualisation of the surah’s contents by him/her. He thus cautions that a reciter of the Quran should not anticipate obtaining these merits by the mere movement of his/her tongue.[3]
