Al-Nāziʿāt · The Wresters
سُورَةُ النازعات
About this chapter
Sūrat al-Nāziʿāt is the seventy-ninth chapter in the Quran and it was revealed in Mecca. Other names for the surah are al-Sāhirah and al-Ṭāmmah in allusion to verses 14 and 34, respectively. Chronologically, it comes as the eighty-first surah after Sūrat al-Nabaʾ and before Sūrat al-Infiṭār. It consists of forty-six verses in addition to the basmalah, the invocation of God’s name.
The introduction sets out when the chapter came and what it addresses; the merits gather what the narrations say of reading it. Both are written as units of the tafsir, with their own footnotes.

Verses you have read are marked; the one you are on is shaded
- 1 By those [angels] who wrest [the soul] violently.
- 2 By those who draw [it] out gently.
- 3 By those who swim smoothly.
- 4 By those who take the lead, racing.
- 5 By those who direct the affairs [of creatures].
- 6–7 The day when the quaker quakes,
- 8–9 Hearts will be trembling on that day,
- 10–12 They will say: ‘Are we being returned to our earlier state?
- 13–14 Yet it will be only a single shout,
- 15–16 Did you receive the story of Moses,
- 17–19 [And said:] ‘Go to Pharaoh, for indeed he has rebelled,
- 20 Then he showed him the greatest sign.
- 21–24 But he denied, and disobeyed.
- 25 So God seized him with the punishment of this life and the hereafter.
- 26 There is indeed a moral in that for someone who fears!
- 27 Is it you whose creation is more prodigious or the sky which He has built?
- 28–29 He raised its vault, and fashioned it,
- 30–32 And after that He spread out the earth,
- 33 As a [place of] sustenance for you and your livestock.
- 34 When the greatest catastrophe befalls.
- 35 The day when man will remember his endeavours.
- 36 And hell is brought into view for one who sees.
- 37–41 As for him who was rebellious,
- 42 They ask you concerning the hour: ‘When will it set in?
- 43 Where are you from knowing its essence and appointed time?’
- 44 Its outcome is with your Lord.
- 45 You are only a warner for those who fear it.
- 46 The day they see it, it shall be as if they had not stayed except for an evening or forenoon.
